US AMBASSADOR EMPHASIZES DECENTRALIZATION IN IRAQ

NRT TV, APRIL. 3: On April 2-3, the Iraq Institute of Energy held the Iraq Energy Forum 2017 in Baghdad under the slogan ‘Iraq Post ISIS -Towards an Effective Energy Sector and Economic Diversity’, under the patronage of the Iraqi Government, and sponsorship of NRT HD and NRT Arabic. US Ambassador to Iraq, Mr. Douglas Silliman, said that Iraq needs to: 1) focus on economic, agricultural, and educational development; 2) implement decentralization "Decentralization is a good thing in governing Iraq"; 3) set new economic plans and avoid bureaucratic procedures for granting investment licenses to international and local companies; 4) adopt plans for diversifying income sources in the country; and 5) manage oil resources well. "Oil may be a curse if it is not well managed. It is necessary to reduce fuel subsidies within an integrated plan, which would cost the government $8 billion annually. Most of the Iraqi gas is burning in the air while it can be invested.” The forum discussed important current and future energy and economic issues in Iraq and the region.

Note: The Iraq Energy Institute was founded in 2008 as an independent institution, which aims to reform energy policy and legislation, and support scientific research. Headquartered in London, the Institute acts as an advisory entity for the Iraqi Council of Representatives Oil and Energy Committee and has Iraqi experts from all energy sectors.
